Had the breakfast/interview for the wheel gig this morning. They're finalizing a few new accounts this week, and I should have a start date in the next week or two. I'm taking my life back.

Sounds good! Hope you'll like repairing wheels and such.

Hopefully I'll have the energy once again to relaunch the site...

Wheel reconditioning tech for a company a former co-worker is running now.

Nice - I did not know that was a thing.

How does one find a wheel reconditioning place? I only knew they existed because of wheeler dealers. It doesn't seem as common here in the U.S.

With the price of stock OEM wheels swelling past $400 a piece, even in mainstream brands, wheel repair is becoming quite a good industry to be in.

It's growing. It's huge for dealerships and body shops. It's just not very publicized for end consumers.

If you were closer to NYC I would gladly send a fellow oppo my Monoblocks for refinishing and the works.

Oh I still have my training to do yet. But in a year or two we might be expanding to cover the rest of the East coast.

Sweet. I was in sales, and I also had a job working with my hands. There is a lot job satisfaction in repairing an item and making it look new. I also liked sales, but the is a bunch of idiots out there and they can make the job suck.
Good luck! hope you like it.

Find a need and fill it. Capitalism 101.

I see. What does it cost a body shop to do a set for a mid range sedan on average?

Good luck! I hope you end up liking it. That was the first job I took out of tech school. Not a good fit for me. The whole situation had me basically set up for failure, which was partially my fault and partially the boss making promises he couldn't keep. But the work is there more often than not and there is money to be made, especially if you become an owner.

Best of luck

It's different for every make/design. But a good rule of thumb is that you could refinish all 4 for the price of buying 1 stock rim off the shelf from parts.

I'll be getting paid training for the first month, and I'm getting into a company on the ground floor that is looking to expand. So I'm pretty hopeful about the whole thing.

How much reconditioning do you do? I have a friend with a rare cast aluminum rim with two cracked spokes.

Once I’m trained I’ll be able to straighten, refinish, and paint. From what I understand, welding cracked wheels significantly weakens them. It becomes a liability. That being said, they might still train me to do it in case it’s an absolute must for a customer and they refuse to buy a new one.
![]() 04/19/2015 at 22:59 |

In this case it is an absolute must. It is an aftermarket wheel and a replacement - if it could be found - would be stupid-expensive.

Gotcha. I should find out in a couple weeks of that’s a technique I’ll be doing or not.

Excellent - keep me in the loop.

its aurora. getting ready for turbo myself!!! V6 and turbo is better then V12 in my opinion

The Aurora was badass. They always looked timeless to me.

YUCK! 2nd gen Auroras (especially V6s) are TRASH! Instead of turboing it, I’d just sell it and buy a better car.
(Oldsmobile fan, Northstar mechanic, have owned both generation auroras)
